Cascades (Portland-Eugene)
POINT has joined Oregon's leading transit agencies, Lane Transit District and TriMet, in transitioning its buses from petroleum diesel to renewable diesel. Not to be confused with biodiesel, this fuel is chemically identical to petroleum gasoline. This means it can be used as a direct replacement in vehicles without needing to perform costly modifications to bus engines in order to switch fuel types. According to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, renewable diesel--also called R99--lowers tailpipe emissions such as particulate matter, carbon monoxide, total hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxide. Renewable diesel burns cleaner than both petroleum diesel and biodiesel, is made from waste products (like fats and oils from plants and animals) that would otherwise be sent to a landfill, is odorless, and is produced in the U.S. This amazing fuel type only recently became commercially available in the Pacific Northwest. Along with its huge environmental benefits over petroleum diesel, it's also more affordable and arguably more sustainable than switching to battery-electric powered vehicles. After several months of testing, ODOT's carrier, MTRWestern, has successfully transitioned all buses used for the POINT's Cascades Route to renewable diesel. Look for POINT buses cruising I-5 proudly displaying our new renewable diesel decals and lowering carbon emissions!
